Springfield, IL (KSDK) - Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has filed a lawsuit against a refinery in Roxana, Illinois.
The lawsuit alleges past and present operators of Wood River Refinery contaminated groundwater under the refinery, which then migrated beyond the refinery's property line.
The current owner, WRB Refining LP, as well as former owners and operators including ConocoPhillips and Shell Oil allowed oil, gasoline, and hazardous wastes to leak into and permeate the groundwater.
The lawsuit seeks the maximum civil penalty of $50,000 per violation, and $10,000 for each day violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act continued.
Madigan is also asking for reimbursement for cleanup costs incurred by the Illinois EPA.
