CHICAGO (AP) - The state's child-welfare agency faces budget cuts of about $85 million, which could mean hundreds of layoffs and cutting services that are keeping thousands of children with their families.

The budget cuts come as the Department of Children and Family Services is already violating a federal decree for having too few investigators. Those are the people who look into allegations of child abuse and neglect, among other things.

DCFS director Richard Calica says he must cut 375 positions, some abuse prevention programs and services that keep children with their families.

Gov. Pat Quinn says he's not happy with the proposed cuts that lawmakers sent to him in the budget. He says he's working with Calica.

The budget has to be signed before July 1.
