Belleville, IL (KSDK)- The Belleville Ordinance Committee has recommended sending the proposed video gaming bill to the City Council for a referendum and a vote of the people in the November general election.
Belleville City Alderman Phil Elmore says the decision came Tuesday night that the issue be forwarded to the full council and eventually the voters of Belleville to decide the hotly contested issue.
Some officials and residents believe video gaming would provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in city revenue annually.
However, the gaming proposal does have its detractors. There are many who believe additional gambling and gaming would result in a rise in crime and gambling addicts.
Alderman Elmore suspects both sides of the issue will continue their efforts to gain support for their respective sides prior to the proposed November vote.
