GALESBURG, IL (AP) - People caught with marijuana in Galesburg soon could get tickets instead of facing state charges.

WGIL Radio reports that the City Council voted 4-3 this week to give police the option of writing tickets for possession of 2½ grams or less. Mayor Sal Garza did not vote, but says he reserves the right to vote within five days.

Galesburg Police Captain Rodney Riggs says issuing tickets to people with small quantities of the drug is an option, but couldn't evaluate its benefits until the ordinance was in effect.

Aldermen also amended an ordinance to lower the fine for possession from $500 to $300, and added language suggesting the ordinance couldn't be enforced if marijuana was legalized.

Some aldermen worry the ordinance won't deter marijuana use, especially among youth.
