Waterloo, IL (KSDK) - Two teens are fighting for their lives and two others are recovering from lesser injuries following a car crash that claimed the life of a fifth person.
The accident occurred just before 11 p.m. Monday, just northwest of Waterloo.
The five people, all friends, were set to start their junior year at Waterloo High School later this month. Monroe County sheriff's deputies said the car they were riding in, a 2006 Mazda 6, flipped. Deputies believe the car was going pretty fast, but, we're told drugs and alcohol were not a factor in this case.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Sam Fannon, is listed in serious condition at St. Louis Children's Hospital. One passenger was discharged from there earlier Tuesday. Two more passengers are in critical and satisfactory condition, respectively, at Barnes Jewish Hospital.
The fifth passenger, identified as 16-year-old Abby Cecena, was killed in the accident. A makeshift memorial has been set up at the crash site.
All five people in the vehicle were wearing a seatbelt.
Investigators said they have be unable t o speak with the students because they've been in the hospital. It's unclear where the kids were coming from, where they were going or what caused the driver to lose control of that car.
Visitation services for Abby Cecena have been scheduled for Friday, August 10 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo. The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m., at St. Peter and Paul school gymnasium.
No charges have been filed and police said they aren't ruling out the possibility for some in the coming days.
