Madison County, IL (KSDK) - A 44-year-old Godfrey, Illinois man has been charged with attempted armed robbery.
The Madison County Sheriff's Office says they responded to a 911 call August 8 after an attempted robbery at the Moto Mart gas station in the 5300 block of Godfrey Road was reported.
Deputies spoke with the clerk who witnessed the crime, and that person said a man walked into the business and went to the snack food aisle.
He then made his way behind the counter and confronted the clerk with a knife.
The suspect then verbally threatened the clerk with violence.
The clerk humped over the counter and fled the store, running to the parking lot where a person was purchasing gasoline.
The customer called 911 and gave a detailed description of the suspect who left the store on foot.
Police tracked the suspect to a home in the 5600 block of Godfrey Road where Terry D. Elsperman was taken into custody.
No injuries were reported.
Elsperman was convicted in 2003 of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Bond is set at $100,000.
He remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
