Senator Mark Kirk (R-Illinois)
CHICAGO (AP) - Sen. Mark Kirk isn't attending the Republican National Convention as he recovers from his January stroke, but he's sent a video message to his colleagues in the Illinois delegation.
In the greeting, Kirk says he wished he could be there, calling it an exciting moment and "one of the most important elections we've ever had."
The 52-year-old Kirk has made considerable progress in his recovery after suffering a major stroke that limited movement on his left side. During his grueling rehabilitation, Kirk still met frequently with staff members.
Members of the Illinois delegation at the convention stood up and applauded after viewing his video message Tuesday.
Kirk says the United States needs Mitt Romney and the fiscal conservatism espoused by his running mate Paul Ryan.
