EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - Deputies with the Madison County Sheriff's Office are investigating a fire involving two pieces of construction equipment owned by a private company contracted to do road work in the county.

According to Captain T. Mike Dixon, a sheriff's office spokesman, the fire occurred in rural Troy, Illinois on Sunday, January 27 around 1:20 a.m. Sheriff's deputies and the Troy Fire Department were called to the intersection of Lebanon and South Liberty roads after a passing motorist saw the pieces of heavy construction equipment ablaze.

The interior cabs of a back hoe and excavator were engulfed in flames, Dixon said. Both fires were extinguished without incident.

The equipment sustained substantial damage in excess of $300,000.

Dixon said the fires were "suspicious in nature" and the sheriff's office is investigating the matter.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Madison County Sheriff's Office at 618-692-4433, their investigation line at 618-692-0871 or their anonymous tip-line at 618-296-3000.
