EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- An attorney for a former student at Southern Illinois University student accused of trying to threaten a deadly shooting rampage wants the charge thrown out on free-speech grounds.
A hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Edwardsville over defense efforts to have 24-year-old Olutosin Oduwole cleared of a charge of trying to make a terrorist threat.
Oduwole was charged in 2007 after police on SIU's Edwardsville campus found a note in his car that demanded $50,000 or vowed "a murderous rampage" similar to the Virginia Tech shootings.
Oduwole's attorneys argue that the supposed threat found scrawled on paper were lyrics written in verse by the aspiring rapper.
Prosecutors counter that the words were meant to instill fear, and that Oduwole at the time possessed a handgun.
