CHICAGO (AP) - Republican Bobby Schilling has defeated two-term Democratic Congressman Phil Hare in Illinois' 17th district.
With 81 percent of precincts reporting, Schilling had 54 percent of the votes, compared with Hare's nearly 42 percent.
The 17th District covers a large portion of the state's western border and has had a Democratic congressman since 1983.
Schilling is a pizzeria owner who has received heavy backing from the tea party. It's his first run for public office.
