By Steve Jankowski Illinois Bureau KSDK - Ashley Reeves, 17, of Millstadt, Illinois, disappeared April 28th. She was found 30 hours later in a Belleville park. She had been choked and left for dead, deprived of oxygen for much of a day. A former drivers' education teacher is now charged with the attack. Reeves is making what is being called a remarkable recovery. She is now being treated at the Ranken Jordan Rehabilitation Center in Maryland Heights. When she first arrived there, she couldn't talk, move, or even sit up. She now gets around in a wheelchair, but she is, as she put it, working hard at the therapy she knows will enable her to get home, the place she says she misses the most. Doctors at the Center could not guarantee how her recovery will end up, but they stress the distance she has traveled so far is because of her own spirit and determination. Ashley credits her family and the support of thousands of strangers for keeping her going. She and her family realize the road to a complete recovery will be a long and hard one, including a stop in a St. Clair County Courtroom for the trial of Sam Shelton, 27, the man charged with attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping in the case. Shelton remains free on bond, awaiting that trial.
