(WNBC) -- Looking to cut costs on your grocery bills?
A shopping expert from The Grocery Game says you can use your freezer to help extend the life of your food so it doesn't go to waste, as long as you know how to store it properly.
Some people think meat will only be good for a few weeks or a month in the freezer, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture says as long as the expiration date is current it can be safe to freeze for up to three months.
The expert says if you want to extend that storage life, double wrap the meat.
However the expert does say, the best way to store any food in the freezer is to vaccum seal it. She says to remember that air is the enemy of food and causes the freezer burn.
Food such as strawberries and dairy products can also be frozen if stored properly. Cheese should be grated before freezing.
With everything you freeze, mark the date on the outside of the bag with a permanent marker.
Although food can be stored in the freezer, remember that the longer it stays in there, it can lose quality and maybe flavor over time.
The expert says the best way to thaw food is to move it from the freezer to the refrigerator.
