(CNN) - Thousands of Facebook users have shared a warning about privacy that turned out to be a hoax.
The posts say anyone who displays the warnings would get extra copyright and privacy protection.
Despite repeated warnings that the postings were bogus, they kept spreading.
Facebook says users who post content are the ones who own the content and control how it is shared.
The social network has had a history of controversies over privacy, and that may have fueled the hoax.
