It's safe to say that if any new TV series wants to succeed in 2013, it would be wise for the show to incorporate some sort of interactive element.
Next month Syfy becomes the first network to package a video game with a series. Defiance takes place in the not-so-distant future (2046), after aliens have arrived on Earth and changed the planet's landscape. Defiance is the name of the border town that used to be St. Louis.
The show's tie-in game is an MMO that will actually evolve with each episode. It's available for pre-order now for $59.99 and up. (Yeah, it's too bad, but this experience will cost you!)
Can't decide whether it's worth the splurge? Syfy has posted the first 14 minutes of Defiance's pilot online. Though I'm not much of a gamer, I'd like to see the full episode; I was impressed by the special effects, and no show can go wrong by including the Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash classic Jackson on the soundtrack.
Defiance has some cult cred as well with the cast, which includes Julie Benz from Buffy/Angel and Dexter, Mia Kirshner from The L Word and Jaime Murray, who played Lila on Dexter.
Below are the 14 minutes, but if that's too much of a commitment, here's the trailer. I'm a sucker for any show that declares, "There's a storm coming!"
Defiance premieres April 15 at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy. The game launches April 2, and you can get info about both at www.defiance.com.
