WASHINGTON, Mo. (AP) -- Officials in the eastern Missouri community of Washington have extended an order to boil water after potentially harmful bacteria was found in water samples.
The Department of Natural Resources issued the order Friday and won't lift it until two consecutive samples test negative for E. coli bacteria. For now, the order is in effect through Thursday.
The water department has added chlorine into one well after samples from the site indicated the presence of the bacteria last week.
City officials continue to look into the matter, but say it appears to be specific to one site and not a problem with the overall water supply.
