(CNN) -- President Obama may be related to the first documented African slave in revolutionary America. -- an online family history resource -- released documents Monday it says back up the possible link.

Four genealogists say they have established a connection between Obama's family and John Punch.

Punch was an indentured servant sentenced to a life of slavery after trying to escape in revolutionary Virginia.

Ironically, Obama appears to be related to Punch through the Caucasian side of his family.

The researchers traced the roots of Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, back to the Bunch family in Virginia in the 16-hundreds.

The family that owned the slave John Punch, married and lived for generations with the Bunch family.

And the generalogists say evidence strongly points to a boy named John Bunch being the slave's son. has been researching Obama's genealogy since he became a candidate for president in 2008.
