We're getting closer to Mitt Romney's announcement of his running mate.

The Romney campaign today announced a new app for iPhone and Android users to learn the identity of who will be Romney's choice for vice president.

"Users of the app will be the first to get the news on the biggest political decision of the year through an instantaneous alert on the one device most people carry around the clock -- their phone," said Zac Moffat, digital director for the Republican candidate.

Exactly who will be Romney's running mate and when that announcement will be made are anyone's guess. The likely GOP presidential nominee is wrapping up his three-nation overseas trip today and campaigns tomorrow in Colorado.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal are among those VP contenders who have been mentioned frequently in news reports.

USA TODAY's David Jackson in our sister blog, The Oval, writes President Obama's campaign has also unveiled a new smartphone app.
