Embattled Senate GOP candidate Todd Akin appears to be hitting back today at a comment made by his party's campaign chief.
"Washington establishment is done with us? That's fine. We've been done with them for years," the Missouri congressman posted on Twitter.
The tweet seems to respond to Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "We're done," Cornyn told Politico, when he was asked whether the group will change course and pour money back into Akin's campaign against Democrat Claire McCaskill.
Top Republicans have tried for weeks to get Akin to quit the Senate race, ever since he made comments about women being able to prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." Akin has apologized repeatedly and railed against "party bosses" who are trying to push him out.
Republicans need a net gain of four seats to gain power in the Senate, and have long viewed Missouri as a possible pickup.
