JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The race for Missouri Secretary of State is too close to call.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday, Democrat Jason Kander held a slim lead over Republican Shane Schoeller. Kander had about 35,000 more votes than Schoeller, out of more than 2.6 million total votes cast.

The Associated Press was not calling the race for either candidate.

The winner will succeed Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, who opted not to run for a third term.

The secretary of state is responsible for overseeing Missouri elections and is responsible for the state archives and state library.

Kander is an attorney from Kansas City and first was elected to the state Legislature in 2008.

Schoeller was elected in 2006 and served in the leadership for the Republican-led House.
