JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - National Rifle Association members and other anti-gun control activists have gathered for a rally on the banks of the Missouri River.

A large crowd rallied on the Capitol's east side Saturday for a protest against gun control measures President Barack Obama proposed Wednesday.

Kenny Parks of Hannibal organized the event in less than two weeks. He described the rally as an expression of support for the right to bear arms and a protest against gun control measures.

Earlier in the week, Obama proposed a ban on assault rifles as part of his gun control agenda.

Some Missouri lawmakers also have proposed gun control legislation, including one bill that would require parents to disclose to their children's school whether they own a firearm.
