KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMBC/CNN) - A gun owner who brought his AK-47 to the steps of a federal courthouse says he was just trying to make a point.

Stan Nyhart marched with the unloaded weapon at the foot of the courthouse in Kansas City, Missouri, Friday.

Police say he'd informed them in advance of his one-man protest and that it was perfectly legal.

Nyhart says he's upset about President Obama's call to renew the ban on military-style assault weapons.

"All my neighbors have either AR 15s, or AK 47s. Or shotguns, or quite a few types of weapons," said Nyhart. "Most of the country is rural people who have these things. Liberal, progressive, Democrat socialists, don't try to take my rights."

The assault weapons ban passed in 1994 and expired in 2004.

President Obama has called on Congress to renew the legislation to help curb gun violence.
