ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - An overflow crowd at the St. Louis Public Library Tuesday night as the candidates for St. Louis mayor took part in a public forum.

The League of Women Voters moderated the event, and three of the four candidates answered a number of questions including their plan for curbing crime.

"The way I think you can solve the crime problem is to make sure those young people have opportunities other than crime opportunities, give them a job, give them some responsibility, give them some training," said candidate Jimmie Matthews.

"First and foremost we need to make sure that we set the environment within our police department where our police officers are happy and they are motivated to do their job," said candidate Lewis Reed.

"We still have a lot of work to do but it's more than just about law enforcement, we have to make sure we have good quality of education for kids, after school programs we started after school for all partnerships,' said Mayor Francis Slay.

Green party candidate James McNeeley did not participate in the forum.
