Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois)
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin has met with President Barack Obama's nominee to be the nation's next transportation secretary.
Anthony Foxx is currently mayor of Charlotte, N.C. Durbin says he'll vote in favor of Foxx's confirmation. The current transportation chief and Illinois native, Ray LaHood, is retiring.
Senators have been pressing Foxx for commitments on a host of transportation issues, including passenger rail improvements.
On Friday, Durbin emphasized the importance of finding funds for a crucial segment of the Chicago-St. Louis high-speed rail project that runs through Springfield.
State and local officials want to consolidate freight and passenger lines through the state capital along a corridor east of downtown.
Springfield is seeking $14 million in federal grant money for the work.
Durbin told Foxx he'll fight to expand federal funding programs.
