GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW/CNN) - Geary County prosecutors say a Fort Riley soldier's failed suicide attempt is to blame for a high speed chase and crash that killed another Kansas man.
Spc. Gary Nelson, 22, pleaded no contest Thursday to second-degree murder and reckless driving.
Nelson reportedly told state troopers he intended to commit suicide by running into a semi truck on Interstate 70 in Geary County in April, but lost his nerve.
Jake Black, 53, was driving one of the cars that swerved out of Nelson's way. The car rolled down an embankment, killing black and severely injuring a passenger.
Nelson's sentencing is set for November.
