CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming says Lynne Cheney told him to "shut up" during a reception Saturday night in Cody.
Both Simpson and Cheney, the wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney, say the dispute centered on Simpson's earlier refusal to sign a football for Cheney's granddaughter at a recent fundraiser in Laramie.
The Cheneys' daughter, Liz Cheney, is challenging U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi in next year's Republican primary.
Simpson tells the Casper Star-Tribune (http://bit.ly/16qI6gq ) he had refused a request from Liz Cheney's daughter to sign the football when the girl said she didn't know if it was going to be used for campaign purposes.
Liz Cheney's campaign on Tuesday released a statement from Lynne Cheney saying Simpson had been rude to her granddaughter.
