St. Louis (KSDK) -- Two members of President Barack Obama's cabinet participated in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut during a visit to Carnahan High School of the Future.
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano joined Missouri Governor Jay Nixon for drill.
Eleven states participated in one of the largest earthquake preparedness drills held in the U.S. at 10:15 a.m.
Participants were told to drop to the ground, take cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table and hold on until the shaking would stop.
The students also learned about the New Madrid Seismic Zone and its earthquake history. At least three of the largest earthquakes in the continental United States occurred in the region from 1811-12. Scientists predict a major earthquake could hit this region in the next 50 years.
They also learned what they should do before, during and after an earthquake.
