Washington (KSDK/AP) -- Two local teachers were among those honored by President Obama at the White House for being winners of state teacher of the year awards.

Alton High School English and journalism teacher Annice Brave was the teacher of the year for Illinois.

Kirkwood High School chemistry teacher Robert Becker was the teacher of the year for Missouri.

They both were in the running to be the 2011 National Teacher of the Year. That award went to Maryland teacher Michelle Shearer.

Shearer teaches chemistry at Urbana High School in Frederick, Md. In a Rose Garden ceremony, Obama said Shearer represents all teachers who are committed to improving their own skills in order to better educate their students.

Obama reiterated his call for Congress to make the No Child Left Behind education law less punitive and more flexible, changes he said would help teachers be more successful in the classroom. He says America's future success depends on the strength of its education system.
