Rural st. Clair County, Illinois (KSDK)--  Firefighters in St. Clair County were out late Tuesday night battling a fire in a building that one time housed a rendering plant outside the Belleville city limits.

The fire was in the first block of Van Rue just after 11:00pm last night.

Fire officials got the call from the property owner who told then he was working in a nearby barn when he began to smell smoke and then realized the smoke was coming from the old rendering building.

Firefighters battled not only the fire, but the struggle to get water to the flames due to a single water hydrant which was more than 1000 feet from the burning structure

Northwest Fire District as well as Signal Hill were invovled in putting the fire out.  No reports of anyone being hurt in the fire.

A cause for the fire has not yet been determined.
