St. Louis (KSDK) - One man is dead and two more are wounded after a shooting in south St. Louis Saturday night. Now St. Louis police are trying to find the gunman.
The shots rang out around 9:15 p.m. in The Grove neighborhood. Jerald Massey, 32, was shot to death inside an apartment on Swan Avenue near Tower Grove Avenue.
St. Louis police say this was a robbery that turned deadly. They tell NewsChannel 5 three armed men tried to rob people inside the apartment building. After Massey was shot and killed, two other men fled the apartment only to be shot while running away. The other two victims are expected to be okay.
All this happened less than a block away from The Grove shopping area, an up and coming hot spot for small businesses, artists, restaurants and nightlife.
But despite all the positive growth, the surrounding area still struggles with crime. And for folks in the neighborhood, Saturday's shooting is a major step backward from the positive reputation they're trying to reach.
"I think it does set us back a little bit," said Shawen Farley, a pastor at Bridge of Hope Church on Swan Ave. "But, adversity gives us an opportunity to persevere and bad times are opportunities for good times."
Neighbors tell NewsChannel 5 they've seen the area go through drastic changes over the years. But they're optimistic the revitalization projects in the area will help The Grove neighborhood get back to its glory days.
The investigation into Saturday's homicide is still ongoing. Police say they're looking for three men and all should be considered armed.
