Maryland Heights, MO (KSDK) - A 21-year-old man is in custody after police say he hit a Maryland Heights police officer with his car and fled the scene.

Police say the officer pulled over a vehicle on a traffic violation in the 1500 block of Roth Hill Drive around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

When the officer began questioning the suspect about a possible drug violation, the suspect accelerated backwards, knocking the officer to the ground.

The officer fired a shot at the vehicle, striking it in a front tire.

The suspect then hit the police vehicle and fled from the scene.

Officers responding to the scene took the suspect into custody after his vehicle became disabled.

A large quantity of drugs was found inside the suspect's car.

The officer was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Charges will be sought Thursday against the suspect.
