East St. Louis, IL (KSDK) - A pair of officers with the East St. Louis Police Department and concerned neighbors rescued a 72-year-old man trapped by a house fire.

The fire occurred around 9:10 a.m. in the 1600 block of St. Louis Avenue.

Police officers were responding to another call in the area when they noticed smoke coming from a nearby home. When police got at the home, neighbors told them an older man was trapped in the home.

The officers and neighbors attempted to get in the home through the back door, but door was barred.

Police found a spare tire and hurled it through a window and pulled 72-year-old David Johnson to safety.

EMS checked Johnson at the scene and confirmed he had no injuries.

Johnson said he was sleeping at the time of the fire and woke up because of the smoke. He said that he was trapped by the bars on the back door of the home.
