Honus Wagner baseball card
St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A rare cigarette baseball card featuring Hall of Famer Honus Wagner sold for a record setting amount of more than a million dollars at auction.
Bill Goodwin, president of Goodwin & Company, a local sports memorabilia company, said the T206 Honus Wagner baseball card-often referred to as "The Holy Grail of Baseball Cards"-sold for $1.23 million.
The auction for this Honus Wagner baseball card set two sports collectible records. The baseball card's opening bid of $300,000 set the mark for highest opening bid for any card at auction. The final price bested the previous record for a Honus Wagner baseball card graded a VG-3 by more than $300,000.
Goodwin & Company sold two other rare baseball cards during this auction: a rarely seen card of Hall of Famer Eddie Plank and a card of Phillies outfield Sherry Magee, with his last name misspelled "Magie." The Plank card sold for $330,825 and the "Magie" card went for $80,000.
With the auction for the Honus Wagner baseball card behind him, Bill Goodwin said he's already fast at work preparing to auction off another highly-prized card: Babe Ruth's rookie card.
