YMCA campground fire could be connected to Freeburg fires

Smithton, Ill (KSDK) -- A fire on the YMCA Lakeside Center, near Smithton, is suspicious and may be connected to a string of other suspcious fires near Freeburg.

Police were notified about the fire in a structure that houses an office around 4:00 a.m. Friday.

The Smithton fire chief said the fire is suspcious because of evidence found ouside the building.  The fire marshal has been called in to investigate.

Investigators are trying to determine if the latest fire is connected to six fires that happened between April 23 and May 9 in Freeburg and in surrounding unincorporated areas.

St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus said five of those fires burned sheds. The Freeburg Township Building and a barn were also damaged in fires.

The fires happened at different times of the day and in areas considered rural. The buildings are located away from houses, but near roads.
