St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A music teacher at Dewey International Studies Elementary School was named the St. Louis Public School District's Teacher of the Year.

SLPS Superintendent Dr. Kelvin Adams surprised Julie Beede during Tuesday morning's school assembly.

Julie Beede came to the St. Louis Public School District in 2000. Since joining Dewey International Studies Elementary School in 2010, Beede restored the school's stage to give students a venue to perform, as well as renovating the school's keyboard lab.

Beede will now be eligible to compete for the Missouri Teacher of the Year honor, which will be selected at a later date.

Dewey International Studies Elementary School is located on Clayton Avenue in the Hi-Pointe neighborhood.
