WORDEN, Ill. (AP) - Civil War soldiers are being memorialized in the southwestern Illinois cemetery where they're buried.

The Alton Telegraph reports that a new Civil War Memorial Stone has been placed at the Worden City Cemetery.

The landmark honors 13 veterans buried there and a 14th laid to rest at the Worden Lutheran Cemetery.

Ed Hainaut says he conceived the idea a few years ago, when he and fellow Worden American Legion members were cleaning up the cemetery and noticed the lack of recognition for the Civil War veterans buried there.

Hainaut got documents about the military backgrounds of those veterans, with help from the Madison County Genealogical Society and the Illinois Secretary of State's Office.

Worden is about 45 miles northeast of St. Louis. ___ Information from: The Telegraph
