Collinsville, Ill (KSDK) -- Illinois State Police found $34,171 during a traffic stop near Collinsville.
Police said a trooper stopped a white 2011 Toyota for driving too closely. The trooper believed there may be criminal activity going on he asked for consent to search the vehicle and uncovered the cash.
Investigators questioned the driver and passenger and both denied owning the money.
"I don't know of too many people who have over $34,000 just lying around," said Captain Parsons. "If you do have that much cash and you have it for a legitimate reason, most people don't take the time to vacuum seal it and then deny ownership of the money," he continued.
Illinois State Police said the driver was an illegal immigrant and is being held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The passenger was released.
