Mellonie D. Jones and Dawn E. Fulks.
St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Jury deliberations ended just before 5:00 p.m. Monday and the woman accused of taking part in the slaying of a man in Forest Park over three years ago was convicted of second degree murder.
28 year old Dawn Fulks is one of two women charged in the beating death of Willard Payne, 26 of University City, on June 15, 2009.
Payne was found dead in the Kennedy Forest section of the park just after dawn by people who were driving past and saw him on the ground.
Fulks was standing trial on first degree murder, filing a false report, and armed criminal action in the case. The jury returned guilty verdicts on a lesser crime of second deagree murder, and guilty on the remaining two crimes as charged. Sentencing will be later this year.
Investigators say Fulks and her friend, 20 year old Mellonie Jones were in the park when they met Payne who they claim invited the women to join him and smoke marijuana.
The suspects told police that Payne tried to sexually assault them while getting 'high' and they were forced to fight off the attack.
Police later found that story to be a lie.
Mellonie Jones is awaiting trial in the case and is scheduled to return to court in December.
