St. Louis (KSDK) - Call it a gateway to a groundbreaking.

Tuesday night, crews started the first phase work on the new park over the depressed section of Interstate 70 in downtown St. Louis. The work is part of a larger effort call CityArchRiver which aims to better connect St. Louis to the Arch and improve the grounds around the city's stainless steel symbol.

MODOT is building a park that will cap I-70 and for the next three weeks, crews will be working overnight from 7pm to 5:30am to collect soil samples along Memorial Drive. The samples will help engineers design the structures that will support the cap over the highway.

"It's certainly a kickoff for what's to come," says Deanna Venker the MODOT Area Engineer for the city of St. Louis.

Venker says the area along Memorial Drive between downtown and the Arch will look much different in the next two years when the structure of the cap is scheduled to be complete and even more so by October 2015 when MODOT plans to have the park's landscaping complete. MODOT plans to start construction of the park over the highway in the summer of 2013.

One thing that could through the schedule off for this phase of work is more Cardinal home game.
If the Cards advance in the playoffs, crews will postpone work on nights of any home games.
