St. Louis (KSDK) -- The superintendent of the Normandy School District will resign at the end of the school year because of personal and family circumstances.

Dr. Stanton Lawrence wrote a letter stating that the circumstances caused him to reconsider his commitment to remain in the school district.

Board Vice President William Humphrey said that Dr. Lawrence will stay on through June 30, 2013

"We understand Dr. Lawrence's interest in being responsive to the needs of his family, and recent developments related to our classification probably make this a natural transition point to consider new leadership," Humphrey said. "At this point in time, we have promising central office and school leadership in place as well as plans to ensure continued progress. We sincerely appreciate Dr. Lawrence's contributions to the district and wish him the very best as he moves forward with his career."

Humphrey said the school board will establish a timeline to begin a formal search process for Dr. Lawrence's replacement.

Dr. Lawrence plans to pursue career opportunities in his native Texas.
