A Democratic super PAC has a new twist on the talking greeting card that takes aim at Rep. Todd Akin.
American Bridge 21st Century sent out a mailer Thursday to Missouri voters featuring the Republican's own controversial words. When the mailer is opened, the recipient hears Akin say, "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Akin is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. He has apologized for his comment, but top Republicans have mostly abandoned him and his Senate race. The mailer includes Akin's words on Social Security and student loans.
"Todd Akin's remarks on 'legitimate rape' are just a starting point for his extreme views," said Matt Thornton, senior communications adviser for American Bridge. "We figured there is no better way to show Missouri voters that Akin is unqualified to be a U.S. senator than to let him speak for himself."
It's the first traditional political communications venture for American Bridge, which does opposition research and candidate tracking to help elect Democrats. The group largely has been using social media as a platform for its work.
