St. Louis (KSDK) - NewsChannel 5 has confirmed a south St. Louis County hospital is reducing its workforce by four percent in an effort to reduce operation costs by $22 million per year.
St. Anthony's Medical Center eliminated 176 positions, 25 in management and 151 non-management, effective Wednesday.
"St. Anthony's believes our community is best served by a thriving, nimble health care institution," said James E. Gardner, Jr., president and CEO. "This change gives our organization its best opportunity to control its own destiny, and to generate the resources required for future investment and growth."
Gardner says the reductions will not affect the quality of care patients receive at the hospital, and this round of cuts is the only round of cuts.
The decision to make the eliminations was made by committees of clinicians.
Gardner also says St. Anthony's is one of the only independent Catholic hospitals in the area, and they want to stay that way and are not in talks with any other hospitals to sell or merge.
Employees affected by the layoff will be given transitional assistance.
