St. Louis (KSDK)-- A Central West End apartment building damaged in a fire over the summer, collapsed Sunday afternoon leaving two workers stranded.

It happened at the Lindell Apartments near Lindell and Vandeventer.

Battalion Chief Duane Greer says three men were working inside the building when a four story stairwell collapsed on top of them. The fire department arrived and had to call in its Collapse Task Force to get two of the men out. No word on the extent of their injuries. The third worker escaped unharmed.

"We took them out of the first floor, so when the stairwell collapsed it collapsed down to the first floor, and that's where we were able to get them out," says Greer.

He says the area is "absolutely unsafe" right now and the building commissioner has been requested to check out the stability of the structure. Greer says he's not sure what caused the building to collapse.

"There's no way for us to know that, we don't know what they were doing inside, we don't know why it collapsed like it did," says Greer.

This part of the complex had mostly smoke and water damage from the July fire. The five alarm fire did gut most of the units.

In 2007 the same building caught fire, investigators say that time it was arson.

It was very windy at the time of the collapse, but investigators do not think weather played a part in the accident.
