Washington D.C. (KSDK) - The Amtrak Police Department named 30-year police veteran Polly Hanson as its police chief.

Hanson will oversee 500 law enforcement officers and civilians in the U.S. as she works closely with local, state and federal Amtrak agencies.

Polly Hanson worked 27 years at Metro Transit Police in Washington D.C., beginning as a police officer and working her way up to chief of police. She then spent three years with Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C. Prior to being named Amtrak Chief of Police, Hanson worked as director in the Office of Law Enforcement and Security at the U.S. Department of Interior, where she was a commissioned federal special agent.

Amtrak sought assistance from the International Association of Chiefs of Police in the search and interview process to find someone to fill the Chief of Police role.

Polly Hanson will report directly to Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman on December 17 to begin her new role as Amtrak Police Chief.
