St. Charles, MO (KSDK) - The Missouri Department of Transportation took down the final thousand feet of the westbound Blanchette Bridge truss Tuesday morning.

The last steel truss came down around 10:20 a.m. as families gathered along the St. Charles riverfront.

More than 4.5 million pounds of steel were sent crashing into the shallow Missouri River.

Interstate 70 was closed in both directions from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. while the bridge was blown up.

A 350-foot section of the Blanchette Bridge was brought down last month.

The Blanchette Bridge blasting is part of a $63 million, year-long project to replace the westbound span. More information on the project can be found on MoDOT's website.
