Hazelwood, MO (KSDK) - St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged a 24-year-old Hazelwood woman with second-degree murder after she left her 9-month-old son unattended in a bathtub of running water.
According to the Hazelwood Police Department, officers and emergency responders were dispatched to the Extended Stay America Hotel in the 6000 block of N. Lindbergh Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. Monday because of an unresponsive child. Officers and ambulance personnel found the boy on the floor of the room with his mother administering CPR.
The infant was rushed to DePaul Hospital's emergency room and pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m.
Investigators said the mother told them she was attempting to bath the boy in the tub and left the room as the child lay in the tub with the water running. The mother said she became distracted on the phone. When she went back to the bathroom, the mother found her son in a tub full of water and not breathing. She pulled her son out of the tub, gave him CPR and dialed 911.
The county prosecutor's office also charged Brooke Maynard with first-degree child endangerment. She remains jailed on $250,000 bond.
