ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KSDK) - St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus has resigned.

Justus turned in his resignation Tuesday afternoon but did not give a reason.

According to the St. Clair County website, Justus started his law enforcement career in Cahokia in 1953. He spent 29 years with the Cahokia Police Department, 20 of which were as police chief.

In 1982 Justus was elected Sheriff of St. Clair County and is known as a "humorous dinner speaker."

Undersheriff Rick Watson will act as sheriff until a replacement is appointed by the County Board.
