St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A homeless St. Louis man was placed on three years probation Thursday after he was convicted last year in a failed robbery attempt at a south city fast food restaurant.

Jurors deliberated nearly three hours before returning a guilty verdict against 35 year old Terry Lewis Madlock on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

Police say Madlock armed himself with an ax and tried to hold-up the Jack in the Box restaurant in the 4200 block of South Kingshighway in July 2010.

Witnesses to the crime saw a police officer nearby and explained what was unfolding.  The officer responded the restaurant where he confronted Madlock and ordered him to drop the ax.

Madlock sat the weapon on the counter and was immediately taken into custody.

More than a dozen patrons and employees were inside the Jack in the Box at the time of the incident, although no one was injured.
