ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A family who lost their newborn son to a rare disease is working to find a cure.

In 2008, Cadan Frericks was diagnosed with congenital diaprhagmatic hernia in the womb.

With CDH, the diaphragm doesn't form correctly and parts of the stomach move into the chest. Cadan was given a 60 percent chance of surviving.

He died at St. Louis Children's Hospital when he was just 12-days-old.

His parents started "Cadan's Carnival" to help fund research on the disease.

On Thursday, they stopped by Children's with a $17,000 donation.

"When he passed on, we felt like he changed our lives forever, and we were determined to make sure his life wasn't in vain, that he did something and made change to CDH," said his mother, Tiffany Frericks.

Along with the money, a 12-year-old friend of the family's brought 100 handmade blankets for kids in intensive care.

To date, Caden's Carnival has raised more than $40,000 for CDH research.
