WEST ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KSDK) -- Two people escaped a house fire in West St. Louis County early Sunday morning.
The one-alarm fire started just before 1:00 a.m. in the family room of a single story house on the 1500 block of Shoemaker Court.
Monarch Fire responded to the call with assistance from the Creve Coeur and Maryland Heights fire departments.
Upon arriving on the scene, fire crews could see heavy fire coming out of the back of the house.
A husband and wife who lived in the home escaped the fire by crawling out of their bedroom window, and were taken to a local hospital for a wellness check.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire very quickly, but the house sustained moderate fire damage and heavy smoke damage, with considerable water damage in the basement.
Because of the damage, the couple will not be able to return to their home any time in the near future.
Roger Herin, a spokesperson for the Monarch Fire Protection District, said "Everybody should have a fire escape plan and practice it because that is what saved this couple's life."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
