RANDOLPH Co. (KSDK) - Two brothers died Tuesday in a house fire in Eden, Illinois.
Authorities say the Sparta Fire Department was called to a home on Valley Steel Road around noon by a mother who said her two sons may be trapped.
When firefighters arrived the home was fully involved. They were able to do a brief search before heat and flames forced them out of the home.
It took two hours for firefighters to get the fire under control.
The bodies of 42-year-old Willie Monroe and 45-year-old Dennis Monroe were recovered from the home after the fire was extinguished.
Randolph County Coroner Randy Dudenbostel says both brothers were paralyzed in separate car accidents years ago and used wheelchairs to get around.
The brothers lived at the home with another brother and his wife and child. All five people were inside the home and sleeping when the fire started.
Dudenbostel says that brother got his wife and son out of the home and tried several times to save Willie and Dennis but was unsuccessful because of heavy smoke and fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities believe a wood burning furnace in the basement may have malfunctioned.
